Meeting set on liens
Friday, Aug. 27, 1999 | 11:28 a.m.
Three Clark County commissioners are being invited to meet Tuesday with contractors who have filed liens against the Venetian hotel-casino.
Officials at the office of Commissioner Erin Kenny said Kenny may attend the meeting. Commissioner Bruce Woodbury was invited but can't attend, organizers said. Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates also will be invited, as will District Attorney Stewart Bell.
"We are trying to keep this in the public eye," organizer John Prendeville said. "We want to find what, if any, political solution can be brought about."
The Aug. 31 meeting will be held at 4:45 p.m. at the Emerald Springs Holiday Inn Hotel, 325 E. Flamingo Road, in the hotel's Emerald Theater.
More than 280 liens have been filed against the hotel-casino, totaling more than $250 million. Contractors say they've been offered pennies on the dollar to settle their claims against the project. Prendeville also said he expects contractor Lehrer McGovern Bovis to file bonds for each individual lien, which would force contractors to litigate each case individually, rather than as a concerted effort to foreclose on the Venetian. The Venetian and Bovis are currently negotiating over cost overruns, change orders and unpaid contractors' invoices at the $1.5 billion megaresort. Prendeville was a project manager for the Venetian for Bovis. He is currently suing Bovis for $14 million, claiming wrongful termination and libel. Bovis denies his allegations.
