"The Secrets of the Volcanic Age," with special guest storybook character Miss Frizzle, will be presented at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, 900 Las Vegas Blvd. North, at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sept. 4.
The presentation will be on the primary elements of volcanic eruptions during prehistoric times. Admission is $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for students, military and seniors and $3 for children ages 4 to 12. Call 384-3466.
Truck stops gear up for Save Lives Day
The National Association of Truck Stop Operators is sponsoring a "Drive to Save Lives Day" blood drive from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday at truck stops across the country, including the Magic Wand Truck Stop, 1100 E. Colton Ave. at Interstate 15 and the Cheyenne Avenue exit.
United Blood Services invites all healthy people between 17 and 79 years old who weigh at least 110 pounds to give blood. All donors must present identification. Call Lori Ciccone at 228-8400, Ext. 257.
Annual Black/White party scheduled Friday
The annual Generic/Black and White Party, a benefit for Aid for AIDS of Nevada, will celebrate its 13th year at 7 p.m. Friday poolside at the Hard Rock hotel-casino.
Bring $25 in nonperishables or sundries to be donated to the AFAN Food Bank and enjoy complimentary beverages, food and entertainment. Call 382-2326.
Exercise evaluation course set for officials
Local emergency operations managers in both the public and private sectors are invited to attend a course in exercise evaluation.
The two-day course is free and will be held Monday and Tuesday at the County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. Contact Debbie Bunch at (775) 687-7362.
Registration due for basketball, football leagues
Youth between the ages of 6 and 18 have until Saturday to register for YMCA basketball or flag football leagues at the Bennett Family YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane.
Mail-in registration is also available. Call 877-9622. Financial assistance is available for most programs.
Bomb Squad plans tryouts on Saturday
Bomb Squad Dance Team tryouts for boys and girls, ages 6-16, will be 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the Gibson Leisure Service Center, 3900 W. Washington Ave.
The Bomb Squad is a hip-hop dance team. The team needs steppers, hip-hop dancers, cheerleaders and breakers. All participants chosen for the Bomb Squad must pay a monthly fee and purchase a uniform. Classes begin Monday. Call 229-5096.
UMC offers tours for Bright Beginnings
University Medical Center is offering a free Victorian tea and video tour for mothers- and fathers-to-be 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at the UMC Bright Beginnings classroom, 1815 W. Charleston Blvd. (behind Del Taco).
The informal gathering is designed to acquaint parents with the labor, delivery and post-partum services available at the hospital and introduce them to the variety of free parenting classes offered through UMC's Bright Beginnings Program. Call 383-2090.
Annual golf tournament will benefit charities
The Las Vegas Host Lions Club is hosting its annual golf tournament beginning 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Highlands Golf Course in Sun City.
The tournament is one of the club's largest fund-raisers of the year, with proceeds going to various charities supported by the Lions. The $125 cost includes greens fee, cart, awards banquet and door prizes.
Tee sponsorships are $100 with the advertising being displayed at the tee. Call Dave Mead at 242-1678 or fax 242-2083.
Event planned this weekend at Cashman
A harvest festival will be held noon-8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday at Cashman Center, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North.
A craft marketplace will be decorated as a 19th century village and feature more than 16,000 unique, high quality and reasonably priced North American hand-crafted goods, as costumed artists demonstrate their skills. Call 386-7100.
