Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge Ron Parraguirre and two private attorneys have made the short list for possible appointment to replace retiring District Judge Joseph Pavlikowski.
The Nevada Judicial Selection Commission interviewed seven applicants Tuesday for the vacancy and narrowed the field to Parraguirre, 40, and attorneys Kenneth Cory, 55, and Allan Earl, 57.
Parraguirre, an attorney since 1986, is the son of longtime Las Vegas lawyer and former Nye County District Judge Paul Parraguirre.
Earl has been an attorney since 1968 after graduating from Brigham Young University and University of California, Berkeley, law school.
Cory, a Las Vegas native, served as a federal prosecutor and deputy public defender before entering private practice. He has been a lawyer since 1971.
The names of the finalists have been sent to Gov. Kenny Guinn for the final appointment to the post that pays $100,000 a year.
The selection commission consists of the chief justice, three attorneys appointed by the State Bar Association and three non-lawyers appointed by the governor.
Pavlikowski retired June 30, but is sitting as a senior judge and handling his old caseload until his replacement is named.
Other applicants for the vacancy were deputy Clark County district attorneys Abbi Silver, 34, H. Leon Simon, 61, Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Hollingsworth, 44, and private attorney William Freedman, 70.
