The Coast Guard called off a massive search late Thursday for a Las Vegas man missing off the coast of Southern California after learning that he was wanted by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.
The Coast Guard launched an extensive search Thursday from San Diego after Stephen D. Oles, 42, failed to return from a boating trip, Coast Guard Lt. Jean Donaldson said.
Law enforcement authorities and the FBI in Pittsburgh said Oles was wanted for white collar crimes in Pennsylvania.
"We wanted to find him if he was in trouble," Donaldson said.
"But after we learned about his background, obviously, he doesn't want to be found," Donaldson said.
An extensive search was conducted between San Diego and Los Angeles, according to Coast Guard officials.
