School of medicine to name dean

Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999 | 11:20 a.m.

The University of Nevada School of Medicine is expected to announce its selection of a new dean by this afternoon or tomorrow, a university spokesman said today.

Greg Bortolin, the school's manager of media relations, said the selection committee is in the process of notifying its two finalists. They are: Dr. David Schapira, an oncology specialist and senior associate dean of the school's Southern Nevada campus; and Dr. Robert Miller, vice chancellor of Health Services at Tulane School of Medicine in New Orleans.

The search committee, comprised of Northern and Southern Nevada representatives, began looking for a new dean shortly after Dr. Robert Daugherty announced his resignation last August. He had been at the helm of the medical school for 17 years.

Schapira and Miller were selected from an original field of 64 candidates. The committee narrowed its selection to a short list of six candidates in June and then the two candidates earlier this month.
