Neighborhood meetings for parkway expansion

In an effort to try to ease concerns of worried residents, the city of Henderson will hold two neighborhood meetings on Thursday on the expansion of Horizon Ridge Parkway.
Both meetings will be held at the Desert Willow Community Center, 2020 West Horizon Ridge Parkway in MacDonald Ranch. The first meeting is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. and is for residents of the Sun City community. The second meeting will begin at 8 p.m. and will be for all other communities affected by the proposed road expansion.
The city's community development department will have planning staff members on hand to explain the expansion of Horizon Ridge Parkway and answer residents' questions.
The expansion of Horizon Ridge Parkway is part of the city's Master Streets and Highways plan, which says the city "reserves the right" to widen the road in the future in some areas from 100 feet to 120 feet to accommodate up to six lanes of traffic.
Residents say expanding Horizon Ridge parkway will make it a major highway, destroying their quiet community with added traffic noise and making the street unsafe to cross.
Hundreds of residents from MacDonald Ranch turned out three weeks ago for a Planning Commission meeting when the item was slated for a vote. The vote was postponed until Aug. 26 to allow city officials to meet with residents first.
The Henderson City Council Tuesday also postponed a proposal to study the expansion of Horizon Ridge Parkway, saying the neighborhood meeting should be held first.
