Lawmaker seeks ban on fees for protective orders

Assemblywoman Ellen Koivisto, D-Las Vegas, also has requested the court to stop assessing a $36 fee to acquire a protective order. The court started charging the fee July 1.
"Quite often the people who find themselves in a situation in which they need to file a protective order do not have the money to pay a $36 filing fee," said Koivisto. "It was not the Legislature's intent to make it more difficult for a person to get a protective order, rather the intent was to make it easier."
"The people requesting these protective orders live in fear for their own safety and often for the safety of their children," she said. "We need to make the process of protecting these victims as easy as possible."
