Clark County offers variety of programs

Clark County Parks and Recreation offers more than 300 classes in adventure recreation, arts and crafts, child development, exercise and fitness, language, martial arts, music, sports, and special interests.

Classes are held at one or more of the 14 urban community center locations throughout the valley. Mail-in registration begins Aug. 30. The six-week class sessions begin Sept. 13.

Learn about canyon's sandstone formations

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers free hikes and walks with reservations. Call 363-1921. Some coming programs:

Sandstone-Calico Hike: Moderately easy 1-mile hike Wednesday along the base of the Calico Hills to discuss desert plants and sandstone rock formations while hiking the ridge from Sandstone to Calico.

Desert Poison: Unique Ways to Die in Red Rock One-hour presentation Wednesday at the Visitor's Center to learn about the poisonous dwellers of the desert from the gila monster to rattlesnakes, scorpions to black widows.

Businesswomen will hear about techniques

Kristie Allen, a Feng Shui consultant, will present "Feng Shui for Career Success" to the Pinon Pines Chapter of American Business Women's Association at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Marie Callendar's, 4875 W. Flamingo Road.

Henderson officials gain national certification

Two city of Henderson planners recently earned national certification.

L. Tracy Foutz and Scott R. Majewski of Henderson's Community Development Department, became members of the American Institute of Certified Planners. They were among eight people in the Nevada chapter certified this year.

Bank of America honors students

The Bank of America Foundation announced recipients of the Joe Martin Scholarship program for children of Bank of America associates.

Local recipients include Ruth Kalunzniak of Las Vegas, who received a $1,500; Lance Ence of Las Vegas, $1,000; and Lisa McLain of Las Vegas and Daniel St. John of Henderson, $500 apiece.

A special $5,000 Award of Excellence was given to Shauna Davis of Las Vegas as the outstanding Joe Martin scholar in Nevada.

MDA seeks volunteers to help with program

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is seeking volunteers to help with the Labor Day Telethon. Telethon organizers need help with answering phones, coordinating food and drinks for workers, distributing posters, greeting guests and other activities.

Shofar needed A local synagogue needs someone to blow the shofar for the high holidays -- Rosh Hashanah, which begins sundown Sept. 10, and Yom Kippur, which begins sundown Sept. 19. If you or someone you know can perform the task, call 655-8603.

Flood damage repaired More than 40 members of the Nevada Carpenters Union spent July 19 working for free to repair flood damage at the Miracle Mile Mobile Home Park. The Nevada Carpenters Locals belong to the 32,000-member Southern California, Nevada Regional Council of Carpenters.
