At-risk students graduate from tutorial program

Monday, Aug. 16, 1999 | 11:01 a.m.

Forty at-risk students from local middle and high schools participated in commencement ceremonies for their summer tutoring program at the Community College of Southern Nevada Friday.

The students had spent their summer at the college's Henderson campus learning effective reading and writing skills.

They spent four days a week at the college, where they were tutored by trained students from CCSN's Center for Teacher Education and Fridays at Henderson's Boys & Girls Club in physical education activities.

The project was funded through a gift from the Nevada Gaming Foundation for Educational Excellence.

Transportation to and from school was provided along with lunch. Most importantly the students were given role models, said Dr. Kevin Laxalt-Olson, director of the project and chairman of CCSN's Education Department.

"Many at-risk children have been proven to thrive emotionally when just one caring adult takes the time to assist them," he added.

CCSN received two other gifts from the foundation to establish a tutorial clinic at the Cheyenne Campus for students in grades 1-5.
