Editorial: California must do more to save Tahoe

Friday, Aug. 13, 1999 | 8:56 a.m.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, R-Calif., was correct Wednesday to chide her own state for failing to keep up with Nevada's efforts to protect Lake Tahoe and stem the lake's dramatic decline in clarity. Feinstein noted that Nevada, which borders one-third of the lake's shores, already has approved the complete financing of its $82 million portion of the overall plan to fight erosion and pollution at the lake. In contrast, California has only agreed to pay for $40 million of the $275 million it is obligated to contribute.

At the federal level Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Feinstein have introduced legislation that would add $300 million in federal funds for this project. In the House, meanwhile, Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., and Rep. John Doolittle, R-Calif., have introduced a similar version. California Gov. Gray Davis says he is supporting a bond -- that will be on the ballot next year -- to pay for California's contribution. It is incumbent on Davis to energetically back the initiative's passage to help ensure that Lake Tahoe is saved for future generations.
