Girl Scouts camp to celebrate Saturday
Foxtail Camp, the 15-acre year-round Girl Scout camp, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday in Lee Canyon at the Forest Service's Foxtail picnic area.
The four-hour celebration will feature booth games and activities, as well as tours of the camp facility by this year's camp director and staff.
Tickets for a barbecue lunch are available through the Girl Scout office for $5 each. The celebration is open to anyone interested in commemorating the anniversary. Call 385-3677 or (800) 945-4070.
Henderson's Safekey program scheduled
The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will accept registration for its 1999-2000 after-school Safekey program for schoolchildren 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, 1-7 p.m. Monday, 1-7 p.m. Aug. 18 and 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 19.
Registration will be accepted at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St. Call 565-2124.
Take a hike through history of the desert
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers free hikes and walks with reservations. Call 363-1921. Some coming programs:
Riparian Dangers: A 3-mile moderate hike Wednesday to explore dangers to Red Rock springs, why they are important and what can be done to keep them healthy.
Tanks for the View: A 2 1/2-mile moderately strenuous hike Wednesday through the heart of sandstone formations on the way to a natural "tenaja" or catchment basin.
Master Singers plan new season
The Las Vegas Master Singers are holding auditions for their 1999-2000 season.
All singers with choral experience and the ability to read well are invited to participate. The Master Singers perform three concerts each year of varied music from Bach, Brahms and Beethoven to show tunes, madrigals, spirituals and barbershop.
They rehearse from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday night. For an audition appointment, call 228-8316.
Rec department to host mall trip
The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services is sponsoring two upcoming events.
Back to School Shopping for Teens will provide transportation to the new outlet mall in Primm 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday. Meet at the Baker Park Community School, 1020 St. Louis, 733-6599. or at the Lied Community School, 5350 W. Tropical Parkway, 229-5072. Cost is $2.
"Jaws 2" will be shown at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Trails Pool, 1920 Spring Gate Lane. This event is free. For more information, call Becker Community School.
NARFE meeting
The National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 423, will meet at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. Attorney James O'Reilly will speak on laws that affect senior citizens. Call 228-9929.
Sport safety course A sport safety training class is being offered 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Chuck Minker Sports Complex, 275 N. Mojave Road. This eight-hour class includes a workbook and a quick reference handbook. Cost $50. Call 229-6563.
Alexander Villas Park groundbreaking A groundbreaking for improvements to Alexander Villas Park, 3620 Lincoln Road, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. County Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates hosts the event at the park, near Lamb and Las Vegas boulevards.
Community college grant The Department of Labor is providing a $98,080 grant to the Community College of Southern Nevada Women's Center in North Las Vegas to help plan, coordinate, and manage an apprenticeship preparation training program.
