Michael Green, a Community College of Southern Nevada professor and contributor to the recently published book "The Maverick Spirit: Building a New Nevada," will discuss the book and his chapter on late Sun Publisher Hank Greenspun at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Desert Willow Literary Guild, 2020 Horizon Ridge Drive.

True tale

Claudia Darkins, author of "A Name I Can't Read: The Rocky Road to Literacy," will sign copies of the book at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Pageant participants

Representatives from all of the states and Puerto Rico vying for the title of Mrs. United States 1999-2000, including Mrs. Nevada 1999, Aileen O'Shields, will appear at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Fremont Street Experience. The festivities will be hosted by Las Vegan Michelle Berk, the reigning Mrs. United States. The new Mrs. United States will be crowned Thursday during a pageant at the Rio hotel-casino.

Performing Arts Society of Nevada's Brown Bag Concerts presents "This Is the Moment," a salute to Elvis Presley, Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck, featuring songs from the '50s through the '90s, at 7 p.m. Monday at the Winchester Community Center Theater, 3130 McLeod Drive. Classic presented

Labor of Love, a nonprofit organization that promotes the arts to area teens, presents Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," at 7 p.m. Tuesday; "A Midsummer Night's Dream," at 7 p.m. Wednesday; and "The Taming of the Shrew," at 7 p.m. Thursday, in the Horn Theater at Community College of Southern Nevada, Cheyenne Campus. Art exhibits

"Imagine," a new mural, the latest in a series of the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission's "Art in Public Places" projects, will be dedicated at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Nevada Institute for Contemporary Art, 101 E. Charleston Blvd. Call 229-4631.

The works of six Southern Nevada artists -- Gregory Etchison, Don Mize, Paul Rodgers, Patricia Vazquez, Whitney Warnick and the late Katherine Gianaclis -- will be on display at the Las Vegas Art Museum, 9600 W. Five Las Vegas sculptors will participate in the world's largest sculpture show in Loveland, Colo., through Sunday. The sculptors are Victor Aguirre, Sandy Messina, Roberta Baskin Shefrin, Paula Thompson and Art Wells -- all members of Las Vegas Desert Sculptors Association. The works of more than 280 U.S. and international artists will be displayed.

Sounds from Los Angeles

The Young Jazz Giants, featuring four Los Angeles-area youth musicians, will perform 8 p.m. Saturday at the Rainbow Library Amphitheater, 3150 N. Buffalo Drive, as part of the Jazz at the Rainbow Series. The students are members of a multischool jazz band that has performed at the Los Angeles Music Center, the Hollywood Bowl and the Playboy Jazz Festival. Blues in the canyon

Kottke to perform

Folk guitarist, songwriter and storyteller Leo Kottke will perform 8 p.m. Saturday at the County Government Center Amphitheater, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, as part of the Summer Concert Series. The Las Vegas All-Star High School Jazz Band, conducted by Walter Boenig, will perform at 8 p.m. today at Hills Park in Summerlin.
