Las Vegan Andre Agassi, whose first-round match was washed out by rain, won twice on Thursday to move into the quarterfinals of the du Maurier Open tennis tournament in Montreal.
Agassi opened with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 6-3 victory over Richey Reneberg in a match postponed from Wednesday because of rain.
On Thursday night, Agassi eliminated Michael Chang 6-2, 7-5.
Also Thursday, Patrick Rafter, the No. 1 seed from Australia, reached the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic.
"To play twice and get through it is a big step forward," said Agassi, who also won twice in one day in last year's du Maurier. "I didn't have the same stick in my game that I usually have, but I'll be fine."
Agassi, who won in Canada in 1992, 1994 and 1995, has reached the du Maurier quarterfinals nine of 10 appearances.
* Sixth-seeded Younes El Aynaoui defeated No. 4 Fernando Meligeni 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinal of the Grolsch Open in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In the day's other match, No. 8 Marat Safin edged unseeded Arnaud di Pasquale 7-6 (9-7), 0-6, 6-4.
* Second-seeded Martina Hingis lost just seven points on her serve in the second set and beat Dominique Van Roost 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the TIG Classic in Carlsbad, Calif. In second-round matches, Sandrine Testud defeated No. 6 Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario 6-2, 7-5, and Anke Huber got past Barbara Schett 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
* Karina Habsudova, seeking to reach her third consecutive final, beat qualifier Angelika Bachmann 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 to advance into the quarterfinals of the Sanex Trophy in Belgium.
