Sparks man comatose after lightning strike

Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999 | 10:17 a.m.

RENO, Nev. - A Sparks man was in serious condition in a coma at Washoe Medical Center today after being hit by lightning during Tuesday's storms.

Lisa Carr said clouds were looming but skies were blue over their Sparks home when the bolt hit her husband Steve, stopping his heart. She experienced only ringing in her ears.

Neighbors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but by the time firefighters and paramedics arrived, he was in full cardiac arrest.

Sparks Deputy Fire Chief Lee Leighton says crews got the man's heart started, but he still has serious head injuries.

Lightning also struck a man in Reno Saturday afternoon, but he wasn't badly hurt. His name hasn't been released.
