Senator says trucks ruining his neighborhood

Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999 | 10:40 a.m.

Joe Neal appeared before the North Las Vegas City Council Wednesday night not as a member of the state Senate but as a private citizen.

Neal spoke to the council in the public comment portion of the meeting about a problem in his North Las Vegas neighborhood.

"My neighbors and I have been noticing some big industrial trucks rolling up and down Commerce between Carey and Cheyenne at around 3 a.m.," Neal, D-North Las Vegas, said. "It's really bringing down the quality of life."

Neal lives on Lance Avenue just off Commerce Street where he says the trucks are noisily trundling along. The neighborhood is bounded by Carey Avenue on the south and Cheyenne Avenue on the north.

Mayor Michael Montandon said industrial-truck operators have been told not to use Commerce as a route between Cheyenne and Carey, and that signs reading "No trucks" have been posted on that part of Commerce.

Some of the trucks are Silver State Disposal Service garbage trucks, Neal said.

"We don't mind them coming through on the garbage pickup days, but they can be very loud and we don't want them coming through when they are not supposed to be there," Neal said. "My neighbors have already said they are thinking about moving because of the trucks. I don't want them to go because we have a good neighborhood."

Silver State and other businesses that use heavy trucks have been told by the city to use Losee Road instead of Commerce to keep neighborhood noise down.

"It looks like this is a matter of enforcement," Councilman John Rhodes said. "We'll request the city manager to contact the police chief to make sure we are getting the enforcement the neighborhood needs."
