Council honors man who saved mom, child

Local security guard Cornell Madison was honored Wednesday as the Las Vegas Citizen of the Month for rescuing a mother and her 3-month old boy during the July 8 flood.

Mayor Oscar Goodman said he chose Madison as his first Citizen of the Month selection because he is "a true hero."

Madison was in the area of Oakey Boulevard and Western Avenue during the height of the flooding when he saw a car begin floating away in high water. He carried the baby from the car to dry land and then went back into waist-deep water for the mother.

The image was captured on local television news coverage and replayed Wednesday for the City Council.

Developer names streets after cops

Sheriff Jerry Keller presented a local developer with a plaque and high praise Wednesday for a decision to name 17 streets in honor of the 17 Metro Police officers killed in the line of duty.

Fred Lessman, vice president of Perma-Bilt Homes, was honored for naming the 17 streets in a new housing subdivision near Cheyenne Avenue and Hualapai Way in honor of the officers.

The new houses are near Metro's training facility. Keller said the street names will remind officers in training of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Violence against women targeted

The Las Vegas city attorney's office has received a $50,000 Violence Against Women Act grant for the fourth year in a row.

The money will be used to continue to fund a victim's advocate and a part-time investigator in the city attorney's domestic violence program.

City turns over land to county

Just weeks after agreeing to spend $25 million on parks, the City Council is already working to get those projects started.

On Wednesday the council relinquished a lease of 37.5 acres of Bureau of Land Management land south of Lone Mountain so that Clark County can develop a park on that site.

The park would serve both city and county residents and would be built between Durango Drive and Riley Street.
