Fishing report — Las Vegas area — Aug. 5, 1999

Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999 | 2:10 a.m.

LAKE MEAD -- Striped bass in the Boulder Basin has been fairly good for boaters while shore anglers are having poor success, according to the Nevada Division of Wildlife. Better areas for stripers have been the tires at Las Vegas Bay Marina, Government Wash, Gypsum Wash and open water from Pyramid Island to the Hemenway Wall. Boaters fishing in the Overton Arm have found some success at Stewart's Point and Fish Island. Bluegill are being caught with mealworms in coves and along ledges. Areas where the lake's bottom is rocky are good locations for finding the scrappy pan fish.

LAKE MOHAVE --There have been several reports during the past week of boaters catching striped bass that weighed from 10 to nearly 30 pounds between mile markers 51 and 54. Boaters fishing out of Cottonwood Cove have been catching stripers that range from 10 to 12 inches on the Arizona side of the lake near the 18 mile marker. Stripers measuring 12 to 17 inches are being taken by trolling with bait at Owl's Point in Davis Basin. Approximately 3,500 rainbow trout are scheduled to be stocked today at Willow Beach by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR --Anglers are finding fair action for stocked rainbow trout even though weed growth in the lake has become a problem. Boaters are having the better success as they are able to avoid the weeds.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR --Rainbow trout fishing remains good while small largemouth bass and an occasional crappie are being caught as well. External parasites are being seen on some trout and, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife, this is not uncommon during the summer months. They say the fish are safe to consume, despite the unsightly appearance of the parasites.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA --Even though mid-summer weather has settled on the area, fishing continues to be fair for rainbow trout and largemouth bass. Boaters have encountered some problems with aquatic vegetation that is abundant in the lakes, particularly at Adams-McGill Reservoir.
