County can bear nudist parking

Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999 | 12:23 p.m.

Members of the Las Vegas Sun Club can now legally park their recreational vehicles at a Sandy Valley nudist camp.

The nudist club, with about 150 members, has met on 7.5 acres in Sandy Valley since 1980, said Gloria Massey, club member and owner of the property about 40 miles southwest of Las Vegas, near the California state line.

In 1995 Massey moved out to the site on Teton Street and added a clubhouse, pool, guest houses and other amenities for the bare-backed RV riders.

However, the land wasn't zoned to allow recreational-vehicle parking, and Massey was cited for failing to get building permits and zoning approval. Armed with letters of approval from neighbors and a nod from the Sandy Valley Citizens Advisory Council, Massey applied for the zoning change to allow her RV nudist camp to operate.

The Clark County commissioners approved her request Wednesday afternoon. No one spoke against the zoning change from "rural open land" to "recreational vehicle parking."
