Spending

Here is how the Las Vegas City Council voted Wednesday to spend taxpayer money:

$392,735 -- To M & H Building Specialties Inc. for a 1,567-square-foot addition to the Detention Visitor Center, 3300 E. Stewart Ave.

$48,609 -- To Marquis Systems for additional services in the upgrades of the electrical doors and gates within the City Detention Center. Marquis was originally awarded $99,608.

$50,000 -- To Credit Card Solutions Inc. for the installation and implementation of a procurement card system for city purchases under $1,000.

$45,636 -- To SJM Industrial Radio for purchases of radios.

The Las Vegas City Council granted its blessing to three key county traffic improvements Wednesday by approving contracts for the planned beltway and other roads.

Without comment, the council approved a $3 million contract for the construction of the Las Vegas Beltway at U.S. 95. That project includes a bridge over U.S. 95 to frontage roads, drainage facilities, traffic signals, islands, signs and pavement marking.

A five-lane bridge will be built at the Centennial Parkway alignment spanning U.S. 95. The cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson and Clark County each share in the total $12 million cost but will be reimbursed by the Regional Transportation Commission.

The council also approved a $500,000 contract for the construction of the interchange at U.S. 95 and the northern beltway frontage roads.

The bid for the beltway project was awarded June 15. Construction is expected to be completed by 2003 at the latest.

The council also approved a contract for the construction of Alta Drive between Rancho Drive to the Union Pacific Railroad property adjacent to downtown.

The project was originally proposed in 1995 and approved by the RTC in June. The $915,000 project will be constructed in three phases. The total project is expected to cost $4 million.
