Toll-free number helps flood victims

The Federal Management Agency has a toll-free disaster information helpline. After registering for disaster assistance, victims can have detailed questions answered about the assistance process, programs available and use of grant money received. Or they can check on the status of an application. Call (800) 525-0321. For the speech and hearing impaired, TTY (800) 462-7585. New mural to be dedicated at event

"Imagine," a new mural, the latest in a series of the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission's art in public places projects, will be dedicated at 6:30 p.m. during a reception from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Nevada Institute for Contemporary Art, 101 E. Charleston. This event is free and open to the public. Call 229-4631 or 229-6844.

Exercises designed for arthritis sufferers

An exercise program designed specifically for people with arthritis will be from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at the Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center, 100 N. Green Valley Parkway, Suite 140.

During this five-week program, participants will go through a series of exercises and activities designed to increase mobility and function. Pre-registration is necessary and enrollment is limited. There is no charge for the classes. You must have permission from your physician to exercise. To register, call 914-7060.

Yard sale to be held on Saturday

A giant yard sale to benefit the eighth annual American Heart Walk will be held from 7 a.m.-noon Saturday in the parking lot of the Nevada Power Company, 6226 W. Sahara Ave. The sale is open to the public with a 50-cent admission fee. Those wishing to sell items may rent a space for only $10. Call 367-5832 to reserve your space.

Course teaches about personalities of babies

"Discovering Your Baby's Temperament" is a free class being offered to parents at 10 p.m. Aug. 12 at the UMC/CCSN Family to Family Connection Center, 1807 W. Charleston Blvd.

Jeri Wallis from CCSN will discuss some of the signs of personalities and how to create the best atmosphere for baby and you. To register for classes, parents are asked to call 383-7058.

American writer focus of assembly

Anne Howard presents a chautauqua event on Kate Chopin, an American writer, from 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 12 at the Las Vegas Senior Citizens Center, 450 E. Bonanza Road. Her stories of Cajun, Creole and Negro cultures of Louisiana are excellent; she wrote "The Awakening" in 1899. Call 229-6454.

Group schedules meeting at library

The Retired Public Employees of Nevada will hold a meeting at 2 p.m. Monday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd. Dr. James Pomeroy will speak on computer literacy for senior citizens and what to purchase. Call 870-1503 or 649-3827.

Health tests given at convention

The public is welcome at the opening of the 1999 National Medical Association Convention and Scientific Assembly. Free blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol tests and coronary risk assessments are being offered from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday with a 10 a.m. news conference at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N.
