Fighter jet base troubles Western Shoshone National Council

Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999 | 2:47 a.m.

LAS VEGAS - The Western Shoshone National Council says it objects to a plan to locate F-22 fighter jets at Nellis Air Force Base.

Shoshone officials say basing 17 F-22s at Nellis would weaken the environmental protection of the Western Shoshone nation. The range encompasses much of what the Western Shoshone describe as their native territory.

"The National Council believes discrimination does play a significant role," said a five-page document given to the Air Force.

The Western Shoshone National Council represents about 10,000 Shoshone people who are spread throughout the Southwest. The figure includes several hundred in the Las Vegas Valley.
