Berkley preparing for challenge to House seat

Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999 | 10:40 a.m.

Anticipating a strong challenge from any Republican contender with a lot of GOP money, freshman Rep. Shelley Berkley has raised more than $480,000 in the first six months of this year for her re-election bid in 2000.

Berkley, D-Nev., has received her biggest donation -- more than $80,000 -- from EMILY's List, a group that supports Democratic women who are pro choice on the abortion issue. She has received $16,000 from other members of Congress. Berkley also has received more than $176,000 from political action committees.

"Right now, we are running against the whole Republican party," said a source close to Berkley. "And you know they (the GOP) are going to pour a lot of money into this race."

Although no opponent has been announced, state Sen. Jon Porter, R-Boulder City, is considering a run at Berkley's seat.
