Man convicted in 1998 killing

A Las Vegas man has been convicted by a District Court jury in the 1998 murder a man who apparently had owed him money.

Since prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty for Anthony Bagley, he has agreed to let District Judge Joseph Bonaventure sentence him next month for the murder of 28-year-old Curtis Harris near H Street and Lake Mead Boulevard.

Harris was standing in the street with friends when Bagley drove up in a vehicle, climbed out and asked Harris about the money owed to the defendant.

After a brief argument, Bagley pulled a pistol and shot Harris once in the chest before driving away.

Three suspects sought by police

Metro Police are asking for the public's help in apprehending three people that used the guise of friendship to rob a Las Vegas woman.

The victim met a woman at a party on the night of July 4 and the two became friends, police said.

The woman asked the victim to give her and two friends a ride home from the party in the 4900 block of Cannon Blvd around 4 a.m. July 5.

Once in the car the victim was ordered at gunpoint to drive to the area of Sirius Avenue and Warnock Road, police said. Once there the victim was pistol whipped, dragged from the vehicle and kicked.

Her car, cellular phone and purse were stolen in the robbery, but her car was later recovered, police said.

The three suspects are wanted for robbery, kidnapping and battery with a deadly weapon.

The woman that befriended the victim is described as Hispanic, in her late teens, 5-feet-5-inches tall and 110 pounds.

The two men wanted in connection with the incident are also Hispanic. One is 17 years old, 5-feet-10-inches tall and 110 pounds. The other is 23 years old, 6-feet tall, 190 pounds with sideburns to his mid-ear.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to contact the robbery detail at 229-3591 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Fourth person dies of injuries

Four people have now died as a result of a head-on collision in North Las Vegas Saturday.

A 16-year-old boy, who was a passenger in a 1984 Mercury that crossed over from westbound Lake Mead into the oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes, died from his injuries just after 3 p.m. at University Medical Center Monday.

The Mercury hit a 1994 Chevrolet head-on in the eastbound lanes of Lake Mead killing a couple and their 3-year-old baby, North Las Vegas Police said.

There are still four people at UMC who were involved in the accident that occurred near Rancho Drive.

The driver and another passenger in the Mercury are in critical and stable condition respectively. Two more people are in stable condition after their Suzuki ran into the rear of the Mercury after the initial collision.

Police believe that the accident was caused by kids clowning around and driving irresponsibly.

Anti-smoking ad campaign begins

CARSON CITY -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Monday kicked off an advertising campaign in five states, including Nevada, to stop the sale of tobacco to those under 18-years old.

Print, radio and outdoor advertising will asks retail store clerks and owners to make sure they check identification before selling cigarettes to minors. The federal agency will spend $306,475 of its $5 million budget in Nevada.

The FDA also started a "Retail Rewards Programs" for staff and managers of a store that passes an agency compliance check by refusing to sell tobacco to youngsters. In Las Vegas, radio stations, KLUC-FM, KXTE-FM, KFMS-FM and KNSE-FM will provide free concert and sporting event tickets as part of the program.

Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa, whose agency leads the drive against sale of cigarettes to minors, said the initiative by the federal agency will help achieve greater compliance with the law.

The advertising campaign will be run in Colorado, Michigan, New Hampshire and Tennessee. It will also target 11 cities around the nation.
