The money will also pay for homework assistance and tutoring to 625 youths in after-school programs. AmeriCorps members will work at schools and at area Boys and Girls Clubs.
The Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribe has also received a $112,500 AmeriCorps grant to employ five full-time and 10 part-time members to tutor kids with low literacy skills.
CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION
Construction has begun on a $3.9 million UNLV Foundation Building.
The 23,000-square-foot structure, scheduled for completion around May 1 is being built on the northeast corner of the university's campus on Maryland Parkway.
"We are extremely fortunate that the UNLV Foundation trustees initiated this important project and have taken an active role to acquire the necessary private funding," said Don Snyder, president of Boyd Gaming and chairman of the Foundation's Board of Trustees.
The building project, which will provide office space for Foundation staff, is a joint effort of UNLV, the UNLV Foundation Board of Trustees and the community.
Currently, the foundation shares spaced with the UNLV Alumni Association.
COMING EVENTS
CLOTHING DONATION
The Salvation Army will bring its "Clothes for Kids" program to the Boulevard Mall this weekend and the weekend of Aug. 13-15.
The program provides new clothes for children of low-income families for the start of the school year and is sponsored by KVBC Channel 3, The Boulevard Mall and the Clark County School District.
Donors will select a child's card, purchase the items listed on the card, and return those items to The Salvation Army booth.
These items are then brought to Family Services and distributed to the children whose families have applied.
DOWNTOWN MURAL
A classically inspired mural painted on the west wall of a downtown law office will be unveiled Aug. 11 as the latest in the series of the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission's art in public places projects.
The mural "Imagine" will be dedicated during a 6:30 p.m. reception at the Nevada Institute for Contemporary Art, 101 E. Charleston Boulevard.
UNLV art and architecture students Paul Fenkell, Jay Hoggan, Ian Lopez, John Santangelo, David Tarantino and Summer Varde designed and painted the mural on the west wall of the Bourgault and Harding Law Office, 200 E. Charleston Boulevard.
The location was selected to bring attention to the emerging arts district development around the Arts Factory in the East Charleston and Main Street area.

The physicals will include lung, weight, eye and throat examinations and a urinalysis. Sports physicals include a hernia check. The cost is $20. For information and site locations, call the hospital at 566-7530.

LEADERSHIP AWARDS
CARSON CITY -- The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill says it will present leadership awards to Gov. Kenny Guinn and Sen. Randolph Townsend, R-Reno, for their work in pushing through a mental health parity law this year.
Nevada is one of 31 states with laws to require insurance policies cover certain mental illnesses just as they do physical ailments.
The presentation of the award will be today in Carson City. Guinn said, "This award is really a reflection of the strong voice our mentally ill citizens have in Nevada through their advocates who are as compassionate as they are determined."
PROBLEM GAMBLING CLASS
is being offered from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road.
