Monday, Aug. 2, 1999 | 10:28 a.m.

A 21-year-veteran of the Clark County School District announced Friday he is resigning to accept a position with the Yonkers, N.Y., school district.

Ray Willis, who was hired as the school district's public relations officer in 1978, will become assistant superintendent of communications for the Yonkers school system in mid-August.

"I have enjoyed serving in a central communications capacity in Las Vegas in one of the nation's largest and most rapidly growing school districts," Willis said. "I am privileged to have had a role in the phenomenal changes that have taken place.

He said he is excited about his new job.

"I look forward to assisting the Yonkers Board of Education, Superintendent Andre Hornsby and his staff to effectively communicate our concerted efforts to foster high academic success for all students," Willis said.

Yonkers Public Schools is the fourth largest school system in the state of New York, with 25,000 students and 38 schools. It is located in southern Westchester County, about 30 miles north of Manhattan.

Willis began his career as a television reporter in his hometown, Fort Smith, Ark.

He moved to Las Vegas, where he worked for KORK-TV Channel 3, now KVBC-TV.
