Letter: Candidates disdain use of ‘soft money’

Monday, Aug. 2, 1999 | 9:38 a.m.

Two candidates, Democrat Bill Bradley and Republican John McCain, say they may refuse "soft money" if they win the nominations of their respective parties.

Bradley made the proposal that, if nominated by the Democrats, he would forgo the use of "soft money" in the general election provided his Republican rival agree "not to raise nor spend 'soft money' in the general election."

McCain said that, if nominated by the Republicans, he would sign such an agreement with Bradley. Unfortunately, their primary opponents, Al Gore and George W. Bush, will see to it with their unlimited supply of special interest bucks that Bradley and McCain don't make it to the finals.
