Letter: Airport planners missed some things

Monday, Aug. 2, 1999 | 9:41 a.m.

Am I the only person to notice a certain flaw in the planning of this airport?

Hundreds of millions of dollars were spent in the construction of this technological wonder. There are landing strips large enough to handle the Space Shuttle, super speed trams that transport you to gates so far away one expects to see "Welcome to Utah" signs, upscale shops and restaurants that put most malls to shame, and parking structures large enough to handle Super Bowl crowds.

The problem is that people like me have to park in the short-term arrival parking lot and fetch the flyers. After dropping more quarters in the parking meter than a bad night in the casinos, you are greeted with a grand total of two elevators, both operating at speeds slower than the San Andreas Fault moves in a year.

When the elevator finally arrives, children and the physically challenged are mowed over by the hoards fighting to get in and off. There are no stairs and no escalators.

The masterminds behind this flaw never expected locals to actually go to the airport and pick up visitors who should be flowing out the main floor doors to the taxis and shuttles.

They probably never told their family and friends they live in Las Vegas.
