Candidate seeks gaming moratorium

Monday, Aug. 2, 1999 | 10:56 a.m.

NEW ORLEANS -- Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer, using the Harrah's New Orleans Casino construction site as a backdrop, called for a national moratorium on additional gambling outlets.

Bauer, speaking over the weekend, said challenges to legalized gambling in Louisiana have made it fertile ground for his anti-gambling crusade.

Video poker machines were ordered shut down in 33 Louisiana parishes last month after they were rejected by voters.

Bauer blamed gambling for social and financial problems like spousal abuse, bankruptcy and suicide, the Times-Picayune newspaper reported.

"Americans are gambling $100 million more a year than what we spend on food," Bauer said, the Times-Picayune said.

Bauer also called for removing ATMs from gambling sites, reducing political contributions by gambling interests and banning gambling by people younger than 21.
