Delay hits Henderson film studio

Friday, April 30, 1999 | 12:05 p.m.

Citing new information from developers and residents, the Henderson Planning Commission postponed its decision on the proposed Black Mountain Studios until its May 27 meeting.

The studio complex, which would be built on 20.5 acres at Dawson Avenue near the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, has come under fire from residents of the neighboring Mission Hills housing development.

The commission had asked the studio developer to produce a diagram showing the line of sight between the Mission Hills neighborhood and the studio at a previous meeting.

Paul Larsen, attorney for the studio's principle developer Doris Keating, presented the line of sight information to the commission Thursday night, saying that the $200 million studio complex would not impair the views of neighbors.

Mission Hills residents presented pictures to the commissioners showing a balloon they say was raised to the height of the proposed studio buildings. The residents contend the balloon was visible from their street, proving any buildings would also be seen.

"I don't see how we can go forward," Commissioner George Bochanis said, who suggested that before the May 27 meeting the commission should meet at the studio site.
