Fred Meyer, owner of Smith's Food & Drug Centers in Las Vegas, is one of the potential buyers, the Times reported. Another is Stater Bros., the newspaper said.
Fred Meyer itself is being acquired by Kroger, the nation's largest grocery chain.
Albertson's, based in Boise, and American Stores are merging. American Stores, Salt Lake City, owns the Lucky and Sav-On drug chains in Las Vegas.
Analysts say regulators want Albertson's to shed as many as 120 stores in Western states where Albertson's and American Stores overlap, the Times reported.
