Letter: Bring back draft to stock military
Thursday, April 29, 1999 | 1:06 a.m.
The Army is considering opening enlistments to applicants with no high school diploma. This is disturbing and only reinforces the idea that the poor and uneducated serve.
It is time to reinstate the draft, without educational deferments. The burden and honor of serving America should be equally shared. The draft should also extend to politicians, federal and state.
Congressman Jim Gibbons' service in Desert Storm serves as an excellent example. A positive result of the draft will be deployment of American troops only when our national security interest is involved.
