Boulder City: Objection to nuke shipments considered

Tuesday, April 27, 1999 | 11:08 a.m.

Boulder City may join Clark County and Henderson in a battle to keep nuclear waste from being trucked through its neighborhoods.

Years ago, Boulder City passed a resolution opposing any nuclear waste passing through town or over Hoover Dam. Now, Mayor Bob Ferraro, who is running for re-election, is asking for an update to the resolution in light of recent proposals by waste carriers.

Bidding to become subcontractors for the Department of Energy, the carriers are proposing routes to the Nevada Test Site that would include Boulder City.

"We wanted the existing resolution to reflect the current conditions and to let the federal government know how we feel," Ferraro said.

The City Council will vote on the resolution at tonight's meeting at 7 in City Hall.

An updated resolution would show that Boulder City agrees with its neighbors when it comes to the nuclear waste transportation issue, Ferraro said.

Clark County commissioners last week approved a resolution opposing three proposed low-level nuclear waste routes through densely populated areas.

Henderson officials are drafting a resolution to submit to the federal government opposing the routes, one of which heads north on U.S. 95 through Searchlight and Boulder City to Interstate 515 in Henderson, then heads west on Lake Mead Drive (State Route 146) to Interstate 15 north to State Route 160 through Pahrump and on to the Test Site.

Vicki Taylor, spokeswoman for Henderson, said a resolution similar to the one the county passed will be voted on by the City Council on May 11.
