Nurses to get pay raise

Representatives of Operating Engineers Local 3 said the raise is an unfair labor tactic the hospital is using to discourage union activities, but they don't plan to contest it.
Washoe Med officials said the raise was legal and based on salary surveys done in November.
Offering a pay raise or changing terms of employment during union organizing is illegal but not uncommon, said Local 3 spokesman Steve Moler.
"It's a way to placate the nurses and discourage them from pursuing the organizing efforts," he said.
The union also is recruiting nurses at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno.
