Two children hurt in three-car accident

A Sunday morning car accident resulted in an elderly man and two children heading to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

James Gambardella, 77, remained in critical condition this morning, while Andrew Legleiter, 5, was in serious condition and Alicia Legleiter, 9, was in fair condition at UMC.

About 11:15 a.m. Sunday Gambardella was traveling northbound on Rampart Boulevard when he tried to make a left turn onto Alta Drive in his 1994 Toyota Corolla, Metro Police said.

Lindsey Accola was traveling south on Rampart in a 1985 Pontiac Fiero with Andrew Legleiter sitting on his sister's lap in the passenger seat of the two-seat car, police said. Both Andrew and Alicia Legleiter were strapped in with the same seatbelt, police said.

As Gambardella made his turn the Fiero struck his Corolla, sending the Corolla into a 1996 Honda Accord that was eastbound on Alta.

The driver of the Accord, Al Brenner, and Accola suffered minor injuries in the accident, which is still under investigation.

Stolen motorcycles found; men arrested

Metro Police at the Laughlin substation recovered two stolen motorcycles over the weekend during the annual River Run motorcycle festival.

On Thursday police received a report of a stolen motorcycle and a description of a suspect. Sgt. Dennis Burgess spotted someone matching the description of the possible suspect leaving the Laughlin area driving a rental truck, police said.

Two stolen motorcycles were found in the back of the truck, and a follow-up investigation yielded four more arrests.

Alfredo Parra, 24, the driver of the truck, was charged with two counts of possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Mario Mancera, 31, Nazario Guerrero, 36, Hector Manuel Reyes, 30, and Michael Trebizo, 37, were all arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit grand larceny.

A 5-year-old child who drowned in a northeast Las Vegas apartment complex Wednesday has been identified as Amber Bolt.

The girl was discovered at about 5 p.m. Wednesday at the bottom of a hot tub at the Eagle Trace Apartments, 5370 E. Craig Road.

She was taken to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The Clark County coroner's office has ruled the death accidental.

Police search for drunken drivers

Metro Police conducted a sobriety checkpoint at Lake Mead Boulevard and Los Feliz Street Sunday as part of an ongoing effort to cut down on alcohol-related accidents.

More than 1,200 vehicles passed through the checkpoint between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. One person was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Capt. Terry Mayo says there have been 18 alcohol-related fatal traffic accidents in the Metro Police jurisdiction since the first of the year.

Record low hit for date over weekend

The Las Vegas Valley experienced record low temperatures and rain over the weekend.

Friday's high temperature of 58 degrees broke the old low temperature mark of 60 degrees for April 21, a spokesman for the National Weather Service said. The old record was set in 1960.

On Saturday the temperature was again around 58 degrees, and the valley received about 0.15 inches of rain.

The rain brought the total rainfall for Las Vegas this year to 0.31 inches.

Suspects sought in two store holdups

Metro Police are investigating two unrelated robberies of a convenience store and an adult video store.

About 7 p.m. April 15 a man used a broken beer bottle as a weapon to force a clerk at a convenience store in southeast Las Vegas to open the register, police said.

The man escaped with an undetermined amount of money in a gold-colored Nissan with Nevada plate 275JTD.

The man is described as black, in his early 20s with black hair. He is 5 feet 10 inches tall and 150 pounds.

The robbery detail is also asking for the public's help in locating a man in connection with the robbery of an adult video store located near Main Street and Charleston Boulevard.

About 5 p.m. April 20 a man told the clerk in the store that he had a gun, but the clerk didn't believe him and a fight ensued, police said.

The man knocked the clerk and the cash register to the ground and grabbed an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing.

The robber is described as black, in his late 20s, 5 feet 10 inches tall and 175 pounds.

Anyone with information on either of the robberies is asked to call the robbery detail at 229-3591 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Robber receives 12 years in prison

A man who pleaded guilty to a September 1998 armed robbery of an Arco AM-PM store has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Ray Revels, 37, was sentenced on Friday for the robbery at 2395 North Rancho Drive, and will have no chance for parole, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office said.

In 1980 Revels was charged as a juvenile in the shooting of a Metro Police officer and his K-9 partner, but Revels was acquitted in the trial claiming he had intended to hit only the dog.
