Carson City and Bureau of Land Management officials gathered Friday to dedicate a mile-long trail along the Carson River on the old ranch.
The trail provides access for wildlife viewing and fishing.
"There's been steady progress to protect this area from development, and we're going to keep working at it," said John Singlaub, manager of BLM's Carson City district office.
The main part of the 703-acre ranch, including the ranch house, is expected to open to the public within the next year.
The ranch was acquired by the BLM in 1997 for use as open space. The city is a partner in the ranch's development for recreation and wildlife conservation.
