Board of Education considers allowing calculators in exam
Monday, April 26, 1999 | 10:15 a.m.
The board last week decided to allow the use of calculators on the test for special education students who are permitted to use the devices in math classes.
The board has been under pressure from parents in recent weeks to ease the graduation exam requirements because so many students have failed the test.
Last week, the board unanimously voted to let students take the test more than the five times previously allowed.
This year's seniors are the first group to be tested under tougher, Legislature-mandated academic standards. Seniors must pass the test to earn a diploma.
