Thursday, April 22, 1999 | 10:53 a.m.

A Las Vegas doctor may find himself on the way to Washington every three months if he is tabbed to serve as a regent for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Dr. Ikram Khan has been nominated for the board by President Clinton, at the request of Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.

The Uniformed Services University trains doctors and nurses for the military and other uniformed services through the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Nursing.

"I'm humbled by this nomination, and feel very privileged, especially as an immigrant to this country to have this honor," Khan said. "If the Senate approves my nomination, I will look forward to serving on the board.

"The three surgeon general's serve on this board and it reports to the secretary of defense, so it is a great honor to be considered."

Khan, who is from Pakistan where he attended the University of Karachi, is a general surgeon and has had a practice in Las Vegas since 1978.

"Dr. Kahn's nomination by the president marks one of the first times in Nevada's history that someone of South Asian descent has been selected for a position in the federal government which requires Senate confirmation," Reid said. "I know this is a tremendous honor for Dr. Kahn and his family because he has never forgotten his roots."

Kahn is the president of Quality Care Consultants and has twice been appointed to the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners. He has also served on the Health Care Cost Containment Committee of the Legislature, and is currently serving on Gov. Kenny Guinn's transition team.
