Shoshone-Paiute tribes receive grant for FM radio station

Wednesday, April 21, 1999 | 2:19 a.m.

The Shoshone-Paiute tribes in Owyhee have been awarded a $266,000 grant from the Department of Commerce to set up a non-commercial FM radio station.

"Owyhee is one of the most remote places in the state of Nevada," said Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., who announced the grant Wednesday. "This grant will allow the tribe to activate their own FM radio station on 88.5. It is the first non-commercial radio station for this community of 1,550."

The money comes from the Commerce Department's Public Telecommunications Facilities Program, which provides matching grants for public facilities that deliver educational and cultural programs.

The station initially will offer four hours a day of local programming. It also will carry satellite programming from KNBA-FM in Anchorage, Alaska and programming from the American Indian Radio on Satellite network.
