Senators criticize Babbitt for new Indian gambling rules

Wednesday, April 21, 1999 | 9:23 a.m.

Sen. Bob Graham, D-Fla., also joined the Nevada senators in sending the letter.

"Simply put, we do not believe Secretary Babbitt has the authority to ignore dozens of elected governors, senators and members of Congress to write his own Indian gaming laws," Bryan, D-Nev., said.

Reid, D-Nev., said the rules put Babbitt in the position of serving as judge, jury and advocate for tribes who want to enter gambling compacts.

Florida and Alabama have sued the federal government over the new Indian gambling rules. They fear the new rules could lead to Las Vegas-style casinos on the states' Indian reservations.
