Wal-Mart will sponsor a jail-a-thon to benefit the Children's Miracle Network, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday at 3041 N. Rainbow Blvd.
Local firefighters, police, Shriners, Wal-Mart managers and a UNLV mascot will be put in "jail" for one hour until they raise "bail." Funds raised will benefit University Medical Center's Children's Miracle Network. Call 656-0199.
Awards to be given to individuals, groups
J.C. Penney, along with United Way and the Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada, will celebrate National Volunteer Week with an awards luncheon on Friday at the Stardust convention center.
King Watts, manager of the Galleria at Sunset Penney's store, will present a $1,000 contribution to six outstanding individual volunteers and volunteer groups. The youth volunteer of the year will receive a $500 scholarship, and the school or organization which the winner represents will receive $500. Ten finalists will receive a $250 contribution for their organizations. Call 892-2322.
Special events are scheduled for Thursday
UNLV and the Las Vegas office of the Environmental Protection Agency will host their annual Earth Day celebration 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday in the university's mall area.
More than 2,000 students from the Clark County School District are scheduled to attend the event. A community service award ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Alumni Amphitheater. Call 895-4439.
A special Earth Day showing, "Wilderness -- Nevada's Hidden Treasure," will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Henderson Convention Center, 200 S. Water St., by the Sierra Club, Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Students Conscious of Protecting the Environment. The event is free. Call 732-7750.
From silk topiary to financial planning
Two workshops are being offered Saturday at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation, 500 Harris St., Henderson.
A silk floral topiary workshop is being offered 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and a financial planning workshop is being offered 9:30-11:30 a.m. Enrollment is $20. Call 565-2121.
CNN's Greenfield will speak May 3
CNN commentator Jeff Greenfield will speak at UNLV 7:30 p.m. May 3 as part of the Barbara Greenspun Lecture Series in Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall.
The event is free, but tickets are required and may be picked up at the Performing Arts Center box office at the concert hall beginning Saturday. Call 895-3801.
Field trip scheduled to check out wildlife
A field trip is being offered to visit the Ash Meadows Wild Life Refuge 6 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday by the Red Rock Audubon Society.
See shorebirds and wintering waterfowl. and bring water, a lunch and snacks. David and Beth St. George will be the group's leaders. For reservations, call 457-8867.
