StumbleTrial begins for man accused in baby’s death

Lonnie Tavares, 23, is charged with murder for the death of 11-week-old Chela Tavares.
The baby girl was taken to Washoe Medical Center on Jan. 31, 1998. She was pronounced brain dead a few days later.
According to court documents, the baby suffered a broken clavicle, 11 broken ribs and a broken arm.
Opening statements before Washoe District Judge Connie Steinheimer were to begin at 10 a.m.
