Letter: Las Vegas behind times on recycling
Tuesday, April 20, 1999 | 11:28 a.m.
On the negative side, I've found a rather laissez-faire attitude toward recycling. Because of the rapid growth of your city you have thousands and thousands of apartments inhabited by thousands of old and new residents -- but no viable recycling program is offered. I know there's recycling for homes and for a few select apartments but, in this instance, you are ignorantly lagging behind other cities. You're a little trashy and anal retentive in this respect.
Even little Reno, which most Vegans hold in such disdain, is much more progressive. They have recycling bins at almost every supermarket for glass, cans, plastic and newspapers. They also have home and apartment pick-up. Why not here?
The Earth's resources are not infinite, and at this time Las Vegas is the epitome of the "throw-away society." Since your water comes from everywhere else, it seems you would be a bit more aware of this.
I don't think you're "Sin City" because you cater to greed, but rather because of your tunnel vision regarding recycling and your precarious future.
