Four UNLV staff members were recognized by the Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada for their outstanding work on behalf of the students and university.

John Bowers, chairman of UNLV's English Department, received the Regents' Teaching Award. Julie Jenson, head of UNLV master's of fine arts degree program in playwriting, received the Regents' Creative Activity Award. Richard Jensen and Lea Sexton, academic advisers, received the first Regent's Academic Advisor Awards.

Science majors receive awards from regents

UNLV chemistry major Kilpatrick Carroll and environmental science major Tara Pike received the 1999 Regent's Scholar Awards for academic excellence and community outreach. Each will receive a $5,000 stipend.

Carroll has participated in cancer research at UNLV, tutors in chemistry and has worked with the UNLV-hosted Eighth Grade Science Fair.

As an undergraduate student, Pike founded the UNLV student organization Students Conscious of Protecting the Environment. Ideas and recommendations written in her undergraduate thesis on how to improve the university's recycling system were adopted, and she is now coordinator of UNLV's Rebel Recycling Program.

MountainView offers pneumococcal vaccine

The pneumococcal vaccine will be offered 1-3 p.m. Friday at the MountainView Senior Friends, 8524 Del Webb Blvd.

Cost is $18 for those who do not have accepted insurance -- Humana, PacifiCare, Railroad and Medicare Part B. Call 255-5404.

AARP teaches how to be defensive on streets

An AARP defensive driving class will be offered noon-4 p.m. Thursday and Friday by Sunrise Senior Friends, 3101 S. Maryland Parkway, No. 314.

Completion of a defensive driving class can save money on automobile insurance. Call 735-5510.

Senior Wheels Program has machines available

Power wheelchairs and electric three-wheel scooters are available to senior citizens with walking impairments through the Senior Wheels Program.

Applicants must be nonambulatory and unable to propel themselves in a manual wheelchair. Call (800) 360-8765.

Hospice plans classes on Saturdays for new aides

Nathan Adelson Hospice is offering a 20-hour volunteer training course on Saturdays through May 15.

The course, beginning this weekend, will provide potential volunteers with the tools to offer emotional and practical support to terminally ill hospice patients and their families. Call Shari Diebold at 796-3185.
