Assembly votes down new insurance requirement
Tuesday, April 20, 1999 | 11:13 a.m.
AB453 was proposed, according to Transportation Chairwoman Vonne Chowning, D-North Las Vegas, because of more drivers are getting themselves and not their individual vehicles insured. Then, when the car is involved in an accident with someone else driving, there may be no insurance available.
But Assemblyman Harry Mortenson, D-Las Vegas, opposed the bill, saying many economy-minded people with several vehicles get policies that just cover them no matter what vehicle they drive.
Mortenson cited the example of a single person who owns two different vehicles, saying an operator's policy of liability insurance cuts his total insurance bill in half. He said he and his wife have four vehicles and could significantly reduce their total insurance bill that way.
Only 20 members of the Assembly voted for the plan. The other 22 voted against it and Speaker Joe Dini, D-Yerington, declared the measure dead.
