This week is National Library Week and to celebrate, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is waiving overdue fines for all materials belonging to the library district.

Charges up to $25 per card holder for lost or damaged materials will also be waived. Lost library cards will be replaced for free. Materials can be returned to any of the 23 branches by Saturday. Card holders must present a valid library card and proof of current address.

Workshop to teach routine maintenance

A car maintenance workshop will be offered 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Saturday at the Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road, Henderson.

The workshop will teach participants basic car maintenance such as how to change a tire and check fluid levels. Participation is $15. Call 565-2880.

Times editor to speak in University Forum

The transition to widowhood and the impact the impeachment has had on the institution of the presidency will be the topics of two University Forum lectures.

Sam Tancnhaus, a New York Times editorial board member and op-ed page editor, will present "Demonizing the Presidency: From Alger Hiss to Kenneth Starr" at 8 p.m. Friday in the UNLV Classroom Building Complex, Room A-112.

Louise Stanger, a social work lecturer at San Diego State University, will discuss "Lifting the Veil of Widowhood" at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History at UNLV. Call 895-3104.

Polish center to host annual event at Riviera

The second Anniversary Ball of the Polish American Center will be at 7 p.m Saturday at the Riviera hotel-casino's Grande Ballroom.

The ball will include dinner, dancing to live music and other attractions. The children Folk Dance Group from White Eagle School will perform. Call 263-8031.

Montoya presentation delayed at UNLV

The presentation by artist, poet, and musician Jose Montoya at UNLV has been postponed until May 5.

Montoya originally was scheduled to appear at the university on April 14. A death in his family made it necessary for him to delay his visit.

Festival planned this weekend at Cashman

The Crafter's Village Festival headed by Denny and Linda Walker will celebrate its fourth spring event noon-7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday at Cashman Center, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

The festival will include more than 250 exhibitors of fine art, crafts and gourmet foods from around the nation. Also the Salvation Army will be collecting food items at the festival. Call 870-2362.

Business Watch to hold banquet at Stardust

Business Watch Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing crime and improving the economic climate of the community, will host its first awards banquet at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Stardust hotel-casino's convention area.

Learn how to fight with a sword at NLV Library

The Las Vegas Fencers Club and the Society for Creative Anachronism will present swordfighting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive.

Witness actual swordfighting, fencing and try your hand with the foil. Call 633-1070.

Kesterson center plans variety of help classes

Three programs, ranging from cooking to parenting, will be offered Saturday at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., Henderson.

A Thai cooking workshop is being offered 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $15 with an additional $5 supply fee due at class time. Participants will receive hands-on instruction preparing egg rolls during the workshop.

A workshop on scrapbooking is being offered 1-3 p.m. Cost is $15, which includes research information, hand-outs, and a refill page.

A free workshop entitled "Practical Parenting" will be held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The instructor will discuss coping skills, problem-solving techniques and communication skills. Call 565-2121.
