Letter: Education without effort meaningless waste of time

Friday, April 9, 1999 | 12:03 p.m.

What is our nation coming to? Now I'm beginning to wonder what school the parents graduated from. You can't blame all the teachers if your kid ends up with a 2.0 rating. The parents have to help out a little, too.

Don't people realize any more that some things are a given right -- like citizenship -- automatically if you're born here?

It's great for everyone to want a piece of the pie, but get your butt in gear and earn your way like we did. If they end up having to give diplomas out "just to keep things cool," so to speak, then they should put their proficiency rating on the diploma so the employers know exactly what they're hiring!

It was bad enough when they put affirmative action in the work place. Are we now going to get it in our schools?

Sounds like the days of saying you need that piece of paper to get a good job may be gone. Personally, two years in the military is a good place for learning and discipline.
