Letter: Judges needed, but Family Court problems run deep

Thursday, April 8, 1999 | 11:49 a.m.

However, what has been ignored by the 1999 Nevada Legislature is the endless testimony of litigants and witnesses who testified before the Subcommittee on the Family Courts last year.

It is painfully obvious, from those who attended, that the problems go much deeper than lack of personnel in this system.

In fact, some of the personnel have been shown to be a cause of many of the problems.

Until these actual problems and causes of such are dealt with and held accountable, there will be little if any reform that positively affects families and children that wind up in this legal quagmire.

In reference to the Chicago system, on Feb. 21 CNN/Time correspondent Linda Patillo stated, "The secrecy (Cook County Public Guardian) Murphy says was supposed to protect children, but instead it protects incompetent parents, social workers and judges and he is determined to open it up to public scrutiny." I find the same to be true in most cities nationwide.
