Argosy faces fine

Wednesday, April 7, 1999 | 10:46 a.m.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Argosy Casino faces a record fine for failing to pay admission taxes on more than 21,000 customers, the Indianapolis Star/ News reported.

The newspaper said the Lawrenceburg casino paid nearly $64,000 in fines last July to make up for taxes it had allegedly failed to pay during the first six months of 1998 and the last quarter of 1997.

Despite receiving a warning from regulators that Argosy was breaking rules on how to count customers, the casino continued to miscount customers, according to a new Gaming Commission complaint.

Commission spokeswoman Jennifer Byrd agreed that, traditionally, the state has levied its heaviest fines against casinos that either egregiously or repeatedly violated rules even after being warned.

"It does increase the seriousness and probably the severity with which we address the situation," she told the Star/News.
