UNLV's men's soccer team took a 3-0 decision from UC Santa Barbara Sunday at Peter Johann Field to up its record to 6-2 on the season. It was the Rebels fourth consecutive victory and gives them more wins this season then they have had in the previous two seasons (5-11-4 in 1996 and 5-11-2 in 1997).
The Rebels struck early on an Andrew Hooker goal in the 10th minute. The assist was credited to Geoff Barto. Jason Melendez added a score at the 24:46 mark on a breakaway goal to give UNLV a 2-0 advantage going into the half. Todd Roberts scored UNLV's final goal at 69:10 off a rebound from Gaucho goalkeeper Brad Coddington. UNLV out-shot the Gauchos 13-10 and took five corners to UCSB's three.
In women's soccer:
The Rebels' Anita Pedford scored a late goal to lift the UNLV to a 3-2 road victory over Utah State.
The game-winner, which came at the 73:00 mark, was the freshman's fourth goal of the season and her second of the day. Her first goal came at 22:28 and tied the match at one. UNLV grabbed the lead when Felicia Madrigal nailed her second goal of the season at the 55:11 mark. The Aggies drew even with a goal from Trisha Cracroft at 63:32.
It was Pedfords's second game-winning goal and put her at the top of Rebel leaders in goals scored with five on the season. UNLV improved its record to 6-3 and will host the University of Wyoming at 7 p.m. Thursday.
