Man, 71, murdered with Candy Lady indentified

Monday, Sept. 28, 1998 | 10:58 a.m.

The 71-year-old male companion of the "Candy Lady," both killed in what appears to be a home robbery last week in West Las Vegas, has been identified as Azel Evans.

Shauntay Wheaton, 15, and DeAngelo Michell, 16, have been charged in the deaths of Evans and Flora Johnson, 86, Metro Police said. The pair was scheduled to be arraigned in Justice Judge Doug Smith's courtroom this morning.

Johnson, who was nicknamed the "Candy Lady" because she sold treats she made in her kitchen to neighborhood children, and Evans were shot to death about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday at their 832 Blankenship Ave. home, off H Street. The area is known for drive-by shootings and other gang-related activities.

Johnson was half-blind and hobbled around with the help of a cane in her modest, single-story home, into which she often invited neighborhood children and teenagers, police said.

Neighbors told police they heard what appeared to be discharges from a large-caliber pistol and saw two young men running from the area.

Metro Police said Wheaton and Michell live within a few blocks of the crime scene. They were booked into Clark County Detention Center Wednesday and charged as adults.
